In reply to your despatch No.5 of the 4th,ul-
timo, and with reference to my telegram of the 22nd.of last
December, I have the honour to inform you that by section 5 of
Ordinance 10 of 1899 the application of the Opium Ordinances
(mentioned in the schedule there to) was excluded from the New
Territories 'unless and until the Governor shall, by Order in
Council notified in the Gazette, otherwise direct".
2. This other direction was given by Government
Notification No.320 in the Government Gazette of the 10th. June
1899, and the Ordinances have been in force in the New Terri-
tories since the 12th. June in that year,
